The stories we tell about ourselves (and to ourselves) form our narrative identity. If we change those stories we also change our identity. But sometimes, changing our story is easier said than done, which is why we have created this course: to help your write (and re-write) your story.

Why you have to write your story:

  1. Mom and Dad can’t help you. Your mother and father used to be able to be your career counsellors. Along with your community, peer group and church, they had your life path all figured out. Now you have to figure it out by yourself.
  2. What and who am I? There used to be professions you could identify with. Now you are faced with vague roles like IT pedagogue and digital architect. You might be facing retirement or creating your own career in an area that didn’t exist when you were finishing your education.
  3. The gig economy and insecurity. Rumours would have you believe you’ll switch careers a dozen times in your lifetime, but what might sooner happen is that you’ll have three to five projects (“jobs”) on the go at once. Your employers’ definition of flexibility may be your reality of insecurity.

What is so special about writing?

Recent research has found that the act of writing, meaning putting pen to paper, is an act unlike any other for helping us learn, grow and retain information. It has been shown to be superior to typing, talking and most other forms of learning. The great part is, you don’t have to be any good at spelling or have great handwriting in order to reap the rewards… the parts of your brain that benefit don’t care if you’re a good writer or not.

That said, you are totally free in deciding how you want to use this course. Some people write their answers in a journal like we suggest, but others type them into blog posts or their own private online journal, some draw pictures, some write music, some just answer with an internal dialogue but remain outwardly silent.

These career prompts are here to help you develop a warm inner compass at any age or stage of your career. These are fifty-two prompts to get you on the way to self insight and inspired being.

What will I get from this course?

You will get answers that are unique and specific to you and your situation. Ultimately, what you will find when you are working with these Career Writing prompts and images is that your results will vary, but will also depend a great deal on how seriously you take the questions, how committed you are to real self-reflection, and how deeply you are willing to go when you write. Some image and question pairs will resonate with you immediately, while some may take a while to process… and yet others may not resonate at all, and that is perfectly normal.
