Authenticity and AI

Authenticity and AI Statement

We believe so strongly in authenticity that it’s at the core of what we believe, it’s what we strive to achieve, and it’s reflected in the way we develop our courses.

We believe in the disruptive and transformational nature of AI when used properly, and we are constantly evaluating the state of AI against various measures of speed, reliability, integrity, accuracy and privacy.  We’ve seen great examples of how ethical AI has worked to make things better across a wide spectrum of research disciplines, industries and communities and we have even delivered workshops on the use of AI in teaching, learning and research.  However, Writing the Self is about making authentic connections with yourself and with others, so for the purposes of Writing the Self, we take a decidedly organic approach because we believe it is inherently better aligned with our goals and beliefs.

While AI can provide many benefits in the creation and delivery of certain kinds of courses and information, there are still several advantages to authentic organic development when considering human-centric and personal development courses. Here are some of the reasons we write our own material, curate our own resources and use AI sparingly:

1. We use human expertise and intuition: Human creators can bring a wealth of authentic experience, expertise, and intuition to the design of a course. They can understand the nuances of a topic and tailor the content to the needs of their audience. They can also draw on their own experiences and insights to provide context and perspective that an AI may not be able to provide.  Our courses are full of carefully human-curated information and exercises backed by years of peer-reviewed research.

2. Human creativity and innovation: Human creators can be more authentically creative and innovative in their approach to designing a course and making lateral connections about what concepts connect to which examples. They can come up with new ideas, approaches, and activities that may not have been considered by an AI.  The core of the Writing the Self methodology is creativity, and it is reflected in how we both design the course and in the exercises you will work on as part of that learning experience.

3. Flexibility and adaptability: While AI can provide adaptive learning features, human creators can be more flexible and adaptable in their approach to designing a course. They can authentically respond to feedback from learners and adjust the course content and activities accordingly.  We love getting constructive feedback on our courses because we see it as a chance to improve them.  As we write this, one of our courses is on it’s 55th revision, so yes, we take the writer’s approach seriously and revise, revise, revise.

4. Empathy and connection: Human creators can establish a deeper connection with learners by providing a more personalized, authentic and empathetic experience. They can create a sense of community and belonging that may be difficult for an AI to replicate.  Part of what we are trying to accomplish with this site is to bring together and provide common space for practitioners of Writing the Self around the globe.  We call this space the International Community of Practice (ICoP).

5. Ethics and values: Human creators can ensure that their courses align with ethical and moral values. They can consider the authentic impact of their content on learners and society as a whole, and make adjustments accordingly.  At the time of this writing, we see daily reports of AI struggling with basic ethics and values in sometimes amusing, but often alarming ways.  Given the nature of what we do with Writing the Self and as practitioners, researchers, teachers, facilitators, writers and humans, we always prioritize the highest ethics and values.

So, while AI can bring many benefits to the creation and delivery of self-improvement courses, there are still several advantages to the authenticity of human-created courses that cannot be easily replicated by AI.
